Common Questions

How does therapy start?

The initial session is the time for you to start to share your story and talk about your goals. Another important aspect of the first session is deciding if the clinician is the right person to assist you in this process. This is a good time to ask yourself, “Do I feel comfortable talking to them?”.

Beginning with the first session and through each follow up appointment, the parent, client, and clinician are establishing a relationship that will become the foundation for working together. Working with the clinician, you will begin to determine some personal goals and your therapist will create a plan to help achieve those outcomes.
How long is each session?

Sessions are 45 minutes long. Please inquire about availability and pricing if you are interested in extending the session.

How often would I come to therapy?

This depends in large part on the intensity of client needs, client progress, motivation, and each individual’s ability to engage in therapeutic homework between sessions. Most clients see the maximum benefit from attending sessions weekly as the process begins, and then session frequency is adjusted based on the client’s needs.

Is what we discuss in sessions confidential?

Your right to privacy and confidentiality is very important to us. The session content and all materials relevant to your treatment will be held confidential unless you request in writing to have all or portions of such content released to a specifically identified individuals/ institutions. Limitations of confidentiality do exist and include:

If a client threatens or attempts to commit suicide or otherwise conducts him/her self in a manner in which there is a substantial risk of incurring serious bodily harm.
If a client threatens grave bodily harm or death to another person.
If the therapist has a reasonable suspicion that a client or other named victim is the perpetrator, observer of, or actual victim of physical, emotional or sexual abuse of children under the age of 18 years.
Suspicions as stated above in the case of an elderly person who may be subjected to these abuses.
Suspected neglect of the parties named in items #3 and # 4.
If a court of law issues a legitimate subpoena for information stated on the subpoena.
If a client is in therapy or being treated by order of a court of law, or if information is obtained for the purpose of rendering an expert’s report to an attorney.
Occasionally, we may need to consult with other professionals in their areas of expertise in order to provide the best treatment for the client. Information about the client may be shared in this context without using their name.
While this written summary of exceptions to confidentiality should prove helpful in informing you about potential problems, it is important that we discuss any questions or concerns that you may have now or in the future.
Are you on call for emergencies?

We do not provide 24-hour emergency care. If you believe you need 24-hour care and/or crisis intervention, we will provide you with a referral to a therapist or clinic that provides this level. Please bring this to our attention as soon as possible, so that an appropriate referral can be made.

If you are experiencing an emergency call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Available Services

  • Individual therapy can provide you with support, increase problem solving skills, assist in the development of coping tools for anxiety, stress, and interpersonal challenges. Your goals are individually tailored to improve the quality of your life. Potential benefits include healthy management of emotions, improved communication skills, increased self-understanding, more compassion, and increased confidence. In many cases clients can benefit from occasional sessions including a parent, partner, or sibling to enhance attainment of treatment goals.

  • Our clinicians are dedicated to helping families understand their child’s diagnosis, find ample support services in the community, and advocate for their needs in school settings. In some cases, visiting a child in their home or at school may be a necessary and important component of treatment, which can aide in skill generalization. Parents may also benefit from learning strategies to improve social communication, enhance executive functioning skills, support healthy habits, and address challenging behaviors.

    Parent Education & Support
  • Therapists may find themselves engaging in treatment with their client that they later learn is on the autism spectrum or that has a neurological difference and have questions about how to proceed with treatment in the most ethical and helpful manner. If rapport is strong with the client, it may be best for the therapist to continue treatment and seek consultation for support in working with that individual. Our clinicians are available to provide support for those efforts by offering a framework that considers the client needs to develop a treatment plan.
